Krishnagiri's History

Welcome to everybody.

Krishnagiri is a Town & district headquarters of Krishnagiri district in Tamilnadu, India.

It is said that this area is once ruled by the King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagar empire, hence the town got the name “Krishnagiri”(Krishna-From the king's name and Giri means hill, Krishnagiri is surrounded by many hills).

Krishnagiri fort and the surrounding areas came under the rule of Hoysalas, Chattrapathi sivaji, Nawab of cuddapah, Wodeyars of mysore, Bijapur sultan and Aurangzeb one after the other.

Krishnagiri was ruled by Hyder ali and Tipu sultan of Mysore in the 18th century. The krishnagiri fort was under their control. In 1768 this fort came under british control for a short period of time.

But Hyder Ali retained the krishnagiri fort with him shortly after war with british. At the end of Third Anglo-Mysore war, by the Treaty of Srirangapatna in 1792 the krishnagiri fort & the surrounding areas then called as Barah mahal(Barah mahal means twelve forts, the surrounding areas has twelve forts) was surrendered to the british forever.

Hosur Chandra choodeshwarar temple was built by cholas.Being a native of therpettai,I know these details clearly. When cholas made an expedition to Talacauvery under the leadership of Raja raja chola, they went in this route and as a matter of fact they stormed the western gangas enroute hosur and gained victory on coorg(tala cauvery) in 998AD.It is their usual practice to settle their troops and people on their way track to consolidate their victory. Thus they built a temple for the already existing suyambu linga eeswara on the top of the hill known as Chandra soodeswara(Chandranai soodiya eeswaran). In the base of the hill they settled their troops and people (vellalars) to live and look after the temple. This place was known as soodavadi, which is presently known as therpettai. Also the previous Mandi gopuram at the entrance of the temple(now demolished and being renovated)was constructed by his son Rajendra chola during his regnal year 1026 AD.This is history.Hoysalas may had later renovated and developed the temple after cholas period, but the original temple and it's construction was carried out by cholas only.
